The animated series / collection of short films (call it what you like best) caused a huge surge of emotions among the people "Love, Death & Robots" from Netflix. I decided to write about this, because this creation also did not leave me indifferent… I’m lying, it left me… I’m lying, something in my soul swayed a little, the middle is in half. Emotionally, my meter earned more because of the visual side of the masterpiece than because of the plot. I didn’t like all of these short stories, but that’s right. I believe that every person will only like what is close to him spiritually, situationally – this cannot be particularly explained in words.
I think that this blog is worth reading for those who have watched or are not going to watch (because there are spoilers here). But maybe it will be interesting for others too. The brief descriptions of the plots are very chaotic, sorry, because the episodes are either too detailed or in two sentences. Dear cats, it’s actually scary to publish such a long blog, few people will probably finish reading it. And there are probably a lot of pictures, but still the visual part is very important here, important?). It will be cool if you write your vision of the series. There is no need to argue, and we won’t, because everyone understands each story only in their own way.
Who worked? The plots of almost all episodes are based on different literary works, and the scripts were mainly written by one person – Philip Gelatt. Short films were drawn by many animation studios from different countries. The plot and visual aspects are sooooo diverse. Perhaps I missed something, because I took information from different sources, and all this in the dead of night, sorry, sorry. One thing is clear – a huge amount of work has been done, and this already makes you feel the scale of the project.
And now about my impressions frankly.
"Sonny’s Advantage" (American Blur Studio, whose founder Tim Miller (directed Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate. Probably, this studio played the greatest importance in the creation of the animated series, because it also led other studios)
Everything here is quite simple and almost everything is predictable. Strong, independent Sonny with a difficult past beats a dude in battle, but then dies at the hands of a sweet but cunning girl, with whom the main character falls in love (or simply sympathizes with her). They dug deep, they covered the fear there, the struggle for life, but the series itself is worth watching mainly only because of the robot battle, because it is filled with power and emotions – the reel looks awesome, the music, the robots themselves, the appearance of the characters, stylish, yes.
But what I didn’t understand here was… a girl, a friend of the main character (presumably) stood and told a guy in a suit that Sonny was raped by some scumbags. She herself is standing in a depraved state, relatively depraved, okay, and she’s blaming her for rape… hmmm… Something’s not sweet.
"Three Robots" (Spanish Blow Studio, who creates her own animated videos)
This series is awesome, and not only because there are cats, which I love very much. Firstly, very bright characters: a small red-haired cute robot – charismatic, curious, active; triangular box – a parody of modern girls in terms of “photograph everything you see”, a tall robot – calm, trying to understand what is happening around.
They walk around, discuss the oddities of life and the structure of people, get acquainted with cats (geez, how funny it was when they were afraid that the cat would explode if you stopped stroking it – there is some truth in this :D). During this episode, the thought came to me that someday the robots will rise up, walk around and stumble upon this series, what will they think about at that moment?))))
"Witness" (Pinkman.TV, American studio, it’s not difficult for anyone who follows the latest in cinema to guess: the artist of this studio, Alberto Mielgo, worked on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)
Personally, I didn’t see any deep meaning in it. I realized what was happening, that a man was chasing a girl, killed her, and then it turned out that they had switched places. The ring composition is also. But I didn’t see anything other than “how difficult the life of a prostitute”.
Visually the series is incredibly beautiful. The only thing is the girl’s breasts… what’s wrong with her? Thank you, StopGame, without your recent video about the part of the body that rules the world, I would not have paid attention to this (probably). Breasts move sooooo unnaturally. And this is true for all girls (perhaps this was intended, hmm). The fact that the heroine ran through the city almost naked gives her special helplessness, which enhances the effect of panic and fear.
"Suits" (Blur Studio)
There is a certain comfort in this series. Probably because everyone there is united, everyone helps each other, a problem arose – they went to solve it, and even the events take place on a farm, which adds a homely atmosphere. And the music is so rustic or something))) But the horror itself, what is happening, how the robotic creatures are tearing apart the cows, looks creepy. The robots are cool, they are so detailed, they don’t look alike, you can feel the strength in them. But even their strength fades before this crowd of incomprehensible and terrible creatures. You worry about the human heroes until the last moment.
I was in awe: how the characters thought out everything there, how everything was captured. But why do they take care of the cows, run this farm, if they managed to create such robots?. Why not create universal robots that would do everything themselves?. But, perhaps, that’s the point: that despite all these powerful gizmos, people do not deprive themselves of the pleasure of starting a household, living creatures. And in general, such a cool combination: cows, chickens and huge robots. One of my close people said that it would be cool to play a game like this, where you use a robot like this to save cows from these little enemies.
"Soul Swallower" (Studio La Cachette, French small and not very famous studio)
A creepy episode (especially the scene where a small guy was torn apart by a creepy creature) and leaves you in the unknown. And that’s all why? Because scientists like to stick their noses into places they don’t ask. Please awaken the evil, as they say. Can’t sit at home
The drawing is simple, yet sticky. The story is very simple, but dynamic, and the style is appropriate. What attracts attention is not so much the color scheme as the active lines.
And cats appear again. Just like in reality, cats are our protectors. But in general, the series is so-so, a lot of questions remain after watching. More than necessary, I think. Most likely the heroes died.
"When Yogurt Took Over the World" (Blow Studio)
The only series whose https://casinonalu.uk/withdrawal/ style I didn’t really like. I don’t know, I just didn’t find it very pleasant. But due to the central character – yogurt – the story resonated with me (some people love yogurts too much :D)
Honestly, I can’t say anything in general. I just want to post a few quotes that contain a metaphor or some hidden meaning that I see. “Our society has turned sour, the cream of society has come to power” “Of course, politicians did not follow the instructions” “Your experts are too involved in the problem to solve it like any other person.” “Life moves from Earth to the stars, but it’s not human life.”.
"Beyond the Eagle Rift" (Unit Image, quite a famous French studio that worked on Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV)
Here… this… graphics! My admiration. Dudes went to one place in space, ended up in another. The main character meets an old friend with whom he has sex, everything seems ok, more or less. And then it turned out that everything was even worse, that there could be no talk of life at all, not to mention pleasures. The plot is very scary, the very realization that you are… not where you think, that it is generally unclear what is happening to you, there is an illusion around you, two realities. Brrrgh, goosebumps.
What outraged me: sex. Yes, he can be outrageous. If you really need to show contrast, black and white, fear and love, then why not show that people just feel good, cozy, warm? It’s much more expensive and brighter than sex and passion. Outwardly, it may not be brighter, but internally the feeling is much stronger. In this case, sex does not enhance the effect, it was stupidly inserted from scratch. Moreover, nudity may distract some from viewing.
"Good hunting" (Korean studio Red Dog Culture House, develops animation for mobile games)
A boy with his father catches foxes – beautiful girls who bewitch men. But then the main character meets one of them and saves her from death. They are friends, soon the guy leaves for the city, works as a mechanic. The same girl who works as a prostitute comes to him. And then she finds herself in trouble: she is deprived of her real body and everything is replaced with metal/iron. Then the main character creates a body for the girl, which transforms into a fox. And then the girl seeks revenge on men.
Well, there’s not much to say here. Girls love to fight for the right to walk the streets safely, for which they are often condemned. Many men simply don’t realize how scary it can be to move around alone. Either men don’t do this themselves, or they live in a box – in any case, they know only by hearsay or don’t know at all. The characters are more or less ordinary (with the exception of the robot fox, which amazes with its thoughtfulness and detail), and the landscapes are beautiful, just wow. Very atmospheric and harmonious. I want to see this every day from the window.
"Dump" (Able & Baker, Spanish studio that previously worked on Despicable Me)
My home is my fortress, no matter what it is. A dude comes to a landfill to evict an old man who has been living there for more than 20 years. But he stumbles upon something, namely a garbage monster, and sees the white light for the last time in his life. And the old man is rejoicing.
The dead rat at the beginning immediately sets the tone for the entire series, it becomes clear that something creepy is about to happen. This is what happens: a resident of a landfill tells a terrible story, the worker does not listen to it and pays for this whole matter with his life. No matter how cruel this series is, there is something bright in it. Probably the realization that you have a home, a holy monastery (even if for others it is a pile of rubbish and dirt), that nothing threatens you and you don’t need anything. Visually, everything is done simply, and at the same time impressive: a huge landfill, the corpse of a friend, a monster who is a cute dog at heart, devouring a worker. Frames are well stored in memory.
"Werewolves" (Blur Studio)
Two men work for the state (something connected with military operations), but unlike the others, these are human werewolves, predators. That’s why they are disliked and feared at the same time. They have good hearing, sense of smell, and vision. They are capable of more than the average person and do everything in their power. However, it happens that the camp (or city) is attacked by enemies, and one of the men remains to blame, they say, did not follow, did not smell. Then the friend of the murdered man is going to take revenge. By order, the main character must deliver the enemy to his superiors alive, but he decides otherwise and settles personal scores. And then he completely refuses this service and goes to bury his friend: “I may be an animal, but now I’m without a collar,” because they don’t appreciate it, because they treat it like an animal, not a person, a mistake of nature.
The ending is strong, very strong, the music is still playing so appropriate. The ending is both pathetic and sad, which is why there are such mixed feelings: either pride or sadness. Graphics again… awesome. These views, uhh. Transformation from people to werewolves, battle. From every blow and splash of blood everything shrinks inside.
"Helping Hand" (experienced Axis Studios from the UK, who worked with major projects Blizzard, Riot Games)
Scary episode. It’s scary not because there’s blood, guts, carnage… There’s practically none of that. I just think that people working in space are the bravest. They clearly understand more than us mere mortals. The plot is simple: a girl has to fix a station/satellite or synchronize something, a fragment flies into the suit, pierces it and… it becomes clear that the situation is dire. But the girl takes herself in both hands for now, goes to extreme measures and returns to her plane/rocket/spacecraft with only one hand. She tore it off for herself in order to push herself in zero gravity in the right direction.
How emotional everything was, a person fights for his life, panics, realizes the situation… and tears off his hand, although this is not a fact that it will help. She is like a fly lying on its back on the windowsill, buzzing and trying in vain to turn over. Graphics make a lasting impression. The cosmic atmosphere, the feeling of weightlessness, hopelessness, the enormity of the Earth and the militarism and helplessness of man are well conveyed.
"Fish Night" (Polish Platige Image Studio, who worked on the history of the creation of “Metro: Exodus”)
Father and son were driving somewhere, stalled in the middle of the desert, went to bed until the morning. And an underwater, magical world appeared right in the desert, the guy started daydreaming, decided to swim with them, but he was eaten by a shark. A wonderful series in terms of visuals, especially the underwater world, luminous fish. Beautiful. And all this beauty, bright emotions are quickly replaced by death, which is visually depicted no less hauntingly. Everything is so slow, smooth, and then suddenly – and sudden death, just like in life. This is what I expected, because when the fish appeared at all, the big one ate the small ones – natural selection, someone has to die for the other to live.
As for the meaning, I saw in the series a typical story “when I was dreaming”. You just have to believe in miracles, daydream, fantasize a lot, and reality will devour you. By the way, this series brought back childhood memories: I wanted there to be a train that goes straight through the water, and behind the huge windows you can see fish and other living creatures.
"Happy Three" (Canadian Sony Pictures Imageworks creates beautiful animated videos)
It’s very symbolic that episode 13 is about the plane with the number 13. I think not everyone noticed this. Mystics rejoice. At the center of the events is a combat aircraft, which is shown as something living and thinking. The car is literally animated. Trinashka always takes everyone out, despite her old age and junk. And then one day it is blown up, the owner of the car plants a bomb so that the plane does not fall to the enemies. But… the car does not explode at the appointed time, but along with the enemies.
This silence between the appointed time and the actual explosion explains everything, and it is very sensual. The ship fights for its own to the last, like a man. There’s nothing special to say about the graphics, it’s just atmospheric, the colors and tones are well chosen. Everything is balanced.
"Winter Blue" (Passion Animation Studios, who worked with Gorillaz and on “Isle of Dogs”)
A distinct style, unusual and ingrained in my memory due to its colors and shapes. Zima Blue is an artist who became famous for his large-scale and blue creativity. He was looking for himself, everyone expected grandiose works from him, but in the end he destroyed himself for the sake of what he needed. He just wanted to appreciate his environment, enjoy a task done correctly, and calmly clean the pool – what he was originally intended to do.
My sadness and happiness knew no bounds. And I’m glad that the central character’s search for truth has come to an end, and I’m sad that it took so much time and vitality. Soulful and creative series.
"Blind Spot" (Vitaly Shushko, our fellow countryman from St. Petersburg, collaborated with Disney)
The beginning of the series immediately reminded me of the game “Borderlands 2”, the same mess. Robots drive at full speed to fight enemies. As a result, three of them die, and the youngest remains alive, completes the mission and is sad because of the death of the others. But in the end… these are robots, right? All data about them is saved, which means you can restore it back.
Very colorful characters. Characters are clearly expressed. Funny episode, lots of jokes, active development of the action. The design of the characters is well-designed, detailed, the explosion is beautiful. Pleases the eye.
"Ice age" (Blur Studio; Canadian Atomic Fiction, which mainly deals with visual effects, for example, in "Ghost in the Shell", "Transformers: The Last Knight"; Hungarian Digic Pictures, which is known for its trailers, for example, for “Assassin’s Creed Origins”)
It’s like watching a mini-movie. A girl and a guy move into a new house, open an old refrigerator, and there is a whole life, history: dinosaurs, monkeys, war, industry. And so in a circle.
The idea seemed original to me. But I liked more how it was all worked out, what kind of houses or war there are, animals or cities, tough guys. It’s quite funny, and I thought that the main characters are looking at this civilization, and someone is looking at them, and someone else is staring at those looking, etc. d.
"Historical Alternatives" (Sun Creature Studio from Denmark, worked with Riot Games, creating videos for League of Legends)
Ridiculous, controversial, funny series. Several options for Hitler’s fate (but the world perishes in any case :D). I wonder why they decided to make a series about him. It probably caused a wave of indignation among some, while others laughed. Hitler turned out to be a rather sweet and small man.
Have you noticed that something is wrong?? (between the legs young ladies right) >_
Laughed at the ridiculous Russian weapon – a piece of jelly. This is the opinion about us over the hill))))) The style matches the plot – it’s kind of ridiculous, but there’s also something cool in it.
"Secret War" (Digic Pictures)
The seriousness of the series is off the charts. It’s still war. At the center of events are the Russian people, who have to fight not only the Germans, but also robot-like (or not) creatures. It’s unclear who is scarier.
These dark grays and reds are awe-inspiring. Occasionally, the green color only appears (when the rocket lights up after a victory), indicating that there is still a faint hope. And how much blood and corpses… The whole area is filled with creatures. It’s like a trailer for some game. Looks creepy. And the graphics are still so powerful, large-scale work on the visual side. It is symbolic that the balalaika, a Russian instrument, is playing in the background.
Let this be here, a picture that you just want to put on your desktop) In general, the series is powerful and doesn’t let you get bored. It either captivates with its mixture and dynamism; or it ends in uncertainty, they say, figure it out for yourself; or takes you to the distant distances of deep thoughts. Not all episodes (although my gut feeling tells me that everything is, I just missed something) are saturated with depressive moods, but 80%. It’s impressive that the series touches on both global aspects of life and small, seemingly insignificant ones. Reliance is on the basic feelings inherent in us: self-defense, love, fear, passion, curiosity, hatred, etc. n. The series is stylish, modern both in terms of trends (fashion) and in terms of trends (problems).
From cons I can only note that sometimes there is an unjustified amount of nudity. It does not always enhance the effect of events, does not always relate to the plot and is sometimes unnecessary. The creators even managed to squeeze it into a series about yogurt. Perhaps I don’t understand something, but… I have my own view on this matter.
And so, the short films are really okay. While I was writing the blog, I noticed many more different details and semantic points. Educational and funny. Be sure to write if you have something to say.
