Games based on books. Kim

This novel R. Kipling’s popularity is compared to “Mowgli”, and he is also interesting because he officially coined the term “Great Game”, which will become fashionable to denote the rivalry between various intelligence services.

The plot tells us about the boy Kim. He is an orphan living in the Indian city of Lahore. For his thirteen years, the boy is quite smart, cunning and resourceful. Kim never misses an opportunity to work for local hucksters and is always ready to be someone’s ears and eyes. This lifestyle suits the guy quite well, because on the city streets he feels like a fish in water. However, his worldview is turned upside down by Lama Teshu, who came from Tibet and is looking for a certain Arrow River. According to legends, this river washes away all sins from a person. Imbued with Teshu’s views, Kim decides to accompany him on this journey as his chela (student).

Based on this story, in 2016, The Secret Games Company studio released the Game “Kim”, which is a mixture of adventure, RPG and roguelike. The player is given control of Kim, who must travel around India completing various tasks. Our client has indicators of health, happiness and fatigue that affect his well-being. A hungry and tired hero will spend more time moving around the world map, and this is one of the most valuable resources, since the game allocates exactly 1365 days for Kim’s adventure, after which the boy will reach adulthood.

After completing a short training that copies the plot of the book, the player receives the first quest and is free to go in all four directions. Initially, the world map is closed and getting around it all in one trip is quite problematic. However, when passing through again, the places where the hero visited during the previous attempt will already be marked on the map. For my walkthrough, I decided to repeat the path from the book.

And I was pleasantly surprised. If you do everything in accordance with the book plot, then the beginning of the journey will be very carefree. In particular, having decided to go on a trip, Kim looks at his familiar horse trader Mahbub, for whom he often carried out various assignments. This time, Mahbub also has a task for Kim – he needs to deliver documents confirming the white stallion’s pedigree to a military man in the city of Ambala. Here Kim receives his first money from Mahbub in the amount of one hundred coins. In the game, they are necessary both for a comfortable transition from location to location, and for purchasing equipment, first aid kits and other consumables.

This is our first stop. When you enter each city, the game gives you a short historical note about it. In addition, all active buildings and NPCs are highlighted so that the player does not miss anything. I hand over the letter to the officer, and at the same time dry up his conversation. It turns out that Kim did not convey a message about the horse’s pedigree, but an encrypted message, after reading which the military decided to carry out a punitive operation against several local princes.

However, Kim is not particularly interested in this information. Mahbub’s order is completed, and Teshu suggests moving on. Moreover, at this moment the player may not even have active quests. It is worth noting that the game does not have any mandatory tasks at all. The player is free to either try to help Tesh find the legendary river, or ignore the old man and go on adventures to the other end of the map. Although there is one problem with this, which we will talk about later.

For now, let’s follow the book and https://nonukcasinosites.co.uk/review/kaasino/ head south. There our heroes meet the English regiment. After a series of minor events, the commander recognizes Kim as the son of an Irish military man named O’Hara. Of course, the military is horrified that Kim behaves like a Hindu, and even travels with some crazy priest. The local chaplain decides that the boy must study at an English school, so Kim is left in the regiment in order to transfer him to the appropriate institution if necessary. By the way, Teshu is not particularly against such an initiative. He, of course, is upset that he will have to part with the student, but believes that Kim needs to take advantage of the opportunity to get an education. By the way, the book Kim had no choice, since all his attempts to escape were stopped by the military, but in the game it is quite possible to escape. Moreover, the game Kim himself must go to school, which means nothing prevents the player from turning away from the path of knowledge at any time.

Well, since book Kim ended up at school, then I’m going there too. At the educational institution, Kim is allowed to increase his stat points through lessons. It’s true that it’s not very convenient. There are several items to choose from, but it is not specified which attribute they will increase. At the same time, one lesson takes three months of time, that is, exactly as long as the book hero spent in school. Moreover, you can study several times in a row, and in the process of studying, steal various useful items.

Perhaps, here you can talk about the karma system. By doing good deeds, the hero earns faith points. Accordingly, bad deeds reduce this indicator, but do not lead to a minus. Unfortunately, it seemed to me that this system does not affect anything. Firstly, no actions require karma points, and secondly, you can lower the counter to zero only if you specifically set yourself such a task, since points are actively awarded for almost any action of the hero.

In the game, immediately after school, the quest about meeting Teshu appears again. However, in the book, Kim traveled for some time, simultaneously realizing that both Mahbub and the military were playing some kind of game and were preparing him to participate in it. Therefore, in the game I traveled around the cities and talked with the military and Mahbub. Game Kim has the same conversations as in the book.

In addition, Mahbub sends Kim to one of the most colorful characters, Lurgan Sahib. This man has repeatedly appeared in the speeches of other authoritative characters as a healer of pearls. He is truly an extraordinary person – he works as a source of income by restoring precious stones, uses hypnosis, has a sharp mind and has other useful skills. Largan subjects Kim to various tests and teaches him important skills for a scout, improving his characteristics along the way. True, the game does not inform that after leaving Largan’s house, the hero appears in Indian intelligence reports as an agent R-17.

Thus, the training is left behind, and it’s time to finally move forward to meet Teshu. Kim takes the train to Benares and the heroes are finally reunited to continue searching for the Arrow River. In the book, they quickly visit several cities, and during a train ride, Kim even has the opportunity to help one of his colleagues escape from persecution. These cities are not in the game, so I move to the final point – the city of Saharanpur.

Here Kim meets another intelligence agent, Hari. Unfortunately, from this moment the book narrative begins to shift its emphasis from the journey to that very Big Game. It turns out that the punitive operation against the princes did not take place, since they were able to conclude a peace agreement with the government. However, it turned out that they were simply stalling for time and continued to accumulate forces for a big war. Suddenly this tense situation was created by the “evil Russians”. Having told all of the above, Hari asks Kim to follow the Russians in order to steal secret documents from them that will allow them to be officially accused of interfering in the affairs of Great Britain.

There is nothing to do, following the book path of the game, Kim goes to the city of Simla, which is located in the mountains. On the way to this city, the heroes cross paths with a Russian officer and a stupid plot twist occurs. The military man liked the religious drawing that Teshu always carries with him, and the Russian wants to buy it. When Teshu refuses to sell the drawing, the military man begins to hit him on the head and provokes a fight, during which Kim manages to knock out the brawler, and at the same time steal secret documents. The idiocy of this scene lies in the fact that earlier this officer was secretly in India for eight months, secretly helping the opposition, collecting weapons and secretly carrying out other assignments. But at the right moment in the plot, because of a beautiful drawing, he decided to beat up a local saint in front of a dozen people.

Okay, let’s leave this plot device behind and get back to the heroes. Teshu gets sick from a blow to the head and Kim, with the help of locals, has to nurse him. Teshu himself is experiencing not so much physical pain as spiritual pain. He is saddened because he wanted to kill the military man in retaliation for the blow, and such violence is contrary to his faith. When Teshu partially comes to his senses, Kim decides to return to Saharanpur. At the same time, he transfers secret documents to Hari, thereby contributing to the Great Game.

It’s time for the final conversation. Teshu explains that he has found his river. After the fight, he kept thinking about his life and the journey they had been through. Finally, he refused food and water and two days later went to drown himself in the river. At that moment, Teshu realized that his soul had become free. According to him, he soared above the world, cleansed himself of sins and was ready to comprehend great knowledge, but then he remembered Kim and returned to earth. Teshu concludes that the search is over. And now she and Kim are going..

Actually I don’t know where. Remember I talked about the problem with the quest line? So, she is drawn from a book. The fact is that the ending leaves the reader frustrated. A long and colorful adventure in the Indian open spaces ends with hunger strike and drowning. Moreover, the most offensive thing is for Kim, we have seen how throughout history he worked hard, gained life experience, got out of difficult situations, in order to ultimately achieve nothing? Essentially, he just became stronger, smarter and more agile, but he literally did not achieve any goals that were important to him. And in the game the situation is even worse. The book at least ends with Teshu’s “enlightenment”, but the game doesn’t. This means that even after completing the priest quest line, the hero is still forced to wait until he reaches adulthood. For example, after completing this task I still have 600 days left. You can, of course, complete other quests, but they feel less developed and secondary.

Perhaps this is the case when the developers approached creating a game based on the book too literally. Outside of the book storyline, many quests seem to be created just so that the player gets consumables that are not particularly needed. Completing the quest to find the river feels like the end of the adventure, but you have to continue wandering around India killing robbers and delivering letters. The game ending itself is made in the form of a couple of paragraphs of abstract text about the beauty of the world around us.

In my opinion, the game, which is positioned as a roguelike, is severely lacking in quest variety. And the most offensive thing is that there are enough locations for this business. The main adventure forces you to explore only half of the map. Unfortunately, having come to a city that was not in the novel, the player will most likely receive a typical quest to kill bandits, which is why the desire to wander around the world in search of interesting activities dies.

Okay, time to sum it up. I had very mixed impressions of the book. I guess I’d still recommend checking it out. Yes, towards the end the plot goes into spy games, but the adventures of the heroes on the roads of India turned out to be atmospheric and memorable. On their way they will meet many people with whom they will have conversations, clearly demonstrating the worldviews of different peoples, castes and religions. Accordingly, if you have read the book, then you should not play Kim, except perhaps for the sake of visualizing the journey. On the other hand, if you are not particularly interested in reading, then it is quite possible to familiarize yourself with the game adaptation of the adventures of an extraordinary Indian boy.

P.S. reading and playing are strictly contraindicated for especially tolerant people, since history contains an abundance of various offensive expressions based on nationality, gender and other characteristics.
