It happened later that entire communities were expelled to the taiga because of differences in rituals. They no longer destroyed those who worshiped other gods, but their fellow believers.
Although for some reason it was? There will still be, because in the fifth edition of the legendary Civilization religion is finally back. She returned, of course, not for free – and the arbiter of destinies will have to pay not only with the lives of heretics for this mercy. Fresh addon called Gods & Kings worth some money in exchange for several new, or rather, well-forgotten old additions to the gameplay.
How to steal a million
Civilization, if you think about it, it reminds me of something The Sims. Here is the feeling of being a deity, deciding the destinies of people and powers, and the opportunity to play endlessly if desired, and a special niche in the gaming industry with its own circle of selflessly devoted fans. No wonder that Firaxis Games slowly adopts successful commercial experience Electronic Arts and begins to act according to a long-established pattern. First, a new version of the game is released with an updated interface, improved graphics, some modifications – and without a number of details that are dear to the fan’s heart, to which everyone has become accustomed thanks to the previous edition. Thus, in the original Civilization 5, the previously successfully tested religion and espionage completely disappeared.
In the second phase of a two-step operation, the developers are bringing back elements that the fan community has been mourning – now in DLC format. For a fee, of course. The players are happy, the interest in the project that had died down is being revived again, and the creators are, in fact, selling the same ideas twice, three times. Four times. So what, the gods love five.
Gods & Kings – a typical example of such a cute scam. The central innovations, as everyone has already guessed, are an updated religion and reduced espionage. However, they also added three independent scenarios, several old and new civilizations and “units”, a couple of dozen technologies. In a word, the facade was updated and painted.
Brothers, sisters and states
Nevertheless, we have to admit: the theme with divine services was implemented quite decently.
The state now accumulates faith points, which can be obtained for the construction of religious buildings and friendship with religious free cities.
Yes, there were some. Some Vatican will https://pushbetcasino.co.uk/ from time to time begin to beg to send them a missionary to make all citizens brothers and sisters in Christ. From time to time, the government of religious cities will also admire the level of our piety – or not ours, if someone else turns out to be more God-fearing. And of course, make friends with all the attendant valuable resources.
To be frank, “clergy” requests come from all types of policies, but these are trifles.
But let’s get back to the points of faith. Having raised a certain amount, you can set up a pantheon in your country and identify some primitive god for worship. Simple pagan beliefs are not yet a religion, but you can grab some bonuses thanks to filthy idols. For example, when the population worships Healers, all our “units” automatically restore health near a friendly city. And the goddess of love improves the mood of her subjects if the population in cities exceeds a certain value.
Fertility cult in a Christian mosque
It is clear that dense paganism is only the starting point for our liturgical development. After some time, a great prophet will certainly appear in one of the cities. It will help establish a full-fledged religion with a set of several beliefs “inside”.
Beliefs are the very bonuses that make the theocratic way of existence attractive. Worshipers of gods can only use one “bun” as a reward for their devotion. Adherents of world religions have much more opportunities.
By the way, we ourselves choose not only who to worship, but also why: theoretically, religion can be “stuffed” with any beliefs. If the great empress of Byzantium decides that Hinduism is more appropriate for her than Christianity, no one will say a word to her about this. Moreover, this woman gets it into her head that followers of Christ should build mosques, purchasing them with faith points, and in this case no one will dare to object to her. Finally, no suicide will prevent the monarch of Constantinople from introducing fertility rites along with mosques in order to accelerate the growth of cities by ten percent. So if a player has always dreamed of remaking one of the world’s religions, getting rid of unnecessary layers and introducing even more unnecessary ones, then he just needs to buy Gods & Kings, to fulfill your blasphemous dreams.
Having created our own cult, we begin missionary activity. Spreaders of the word of God are bought for faith points, just like inquisitors who counter the corrupting influences of other heretical preachers from other countries. Instructing lost sheep from someone else’s flock on the right path is very good from the point of view of diplomacy: a common religion serves as an additional plus in the struggle for the sympathy and friendship of august neighbors. However, territorial claims in interstate relations still play a more significant role. Moreover, if the ruler of a foreign power manages to decide on his own, original religion, our missionaries will have nothing to catch on his lands. It is, of course, possible to convert a city or two, but the monarch will certainly not be delighted with attempts to sow religious division in the state under his control.
Stirlitz local spill
Spies are much more modest people than missionaries. So modest that they are not even visible on the map. The screen dedicated to reconnaissance allows us to send soldiers of the invisible front “to visit” our neighbors. In the cities of rival powers, you can grab a couple of technologies in reserve – but only if they have managed to overtake you in terms of scientific development. Another type of sabotage is available in policies – rigging elections in one’s favor. If the spy manages to falsify the results, the city-state becomes our ally.
A scout can also thwart the insidious plans of computer opponents. If you manage to launch your “ears” into the right place at the right time, you will have a chance to find out in advance about an impending conspiracy or attack.
Despite the abundance of functions, the spy line leaves a blurry impression. Especially considering that “people in gray” get hired automatically as we develop. That is, you cannot buy yourself an additional team of scouts.
Apart from religion and espionage, perhaps only the scenarios deserve special attention. In one of them we can finally finish off the falling Rome or, on the contrary, save it contrary to historical logic. The second scenario is largely intended to demonstrate the new possibilities of religion. The third story, the most interesting in our opinion, tells about fantastic steam empires that are fighting for world domination. This is a classic steampunk with a special technology tree, bizarre wunderwaffles like the “sky fortress”, strange resources called “etherium” and “luborium” instead of the usual aluminum. One of the world leaders here wears an artificial eye like a monocle, and victory is achieved by leading the League of Empires in three parameters at once for five turns in a row.
If the remaining two scenarios look like fragments of the “big game”, squeezed into the framework of mini-games, then “The World of Steam and Steel” is an independent charming toy that cannot but delight everyone who is partial to steampunk. It’s just a pity that the fantastic buildings we build cannot be appreciated visually.
Badly forgotten old
All that’s left to talk about is the little things. Nine new states have been added with their own leaders and bells and whistles. True, to be honest, they are not that new. WITH Attila, for example, we have known each other since time immemorial. So this is more likely the return of the prodigal Hun than a full-fledged roster update. Of the less familiar faces – William of Orange, ruler of the Netherlands, and Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria. Exotic lovers can choose Maya with Pakalem at the head or Carthage, which is in charge Dido.
As usual, each power has special fighters or buildings in its arsenal. Byzantium, for example, creates cataphracts – improved horsemen, Carthage tramples the enemy with elephants, and Austria… builds coffee shops where hussars sit in their pants.
The regular troops available to each civilization once again include fighters and marines, as well as several other “units” familiar to us from previous games in the series. New technologies and wonders of the world were introduced, which were also mostly used. Pleasant improvements include the division of ships into two classes based on range, more sophisticated and varied tasks from city-states and slightly adjusted AI, which is nevertheless still very far from ideal.
The model of reselling content that has already been sold once works. Gods & Kings – quite a decent addon. Regardless of our indignation at the greed of developers and publishers, the add-on will fulfill its function: the slightly boring original Civilization 5 will sparkle with new colors and pull players out of the real world for some more time.
Pros: a lot of interesting content; original script in steampunk style.Cons: secondary within the series.
